Applications for recognition of Italian citizenship by descent must be presented to the Italian consulate or embassy that serves where you live.
IMPORTANT: You may not apply at the Consulate or Embassy of your choice. You must apply at the Consular authority that has jurisdiction over your place of permanent residence. This includes applying in Italy–you must be a resident in Italy to apply directly in Italy. See our section on applying in Italy for details.
For the purposes described here, “permanent residence” is the place where you keep your habitual dwelling (i.e. you pay bills there, have a State-issued ID at that address, etc.).
